Leadership
One story that the Hebrew writers all agree on throughout the Old Testament is that David makes for a worthy king! David can do a lot with only a little. You’ll likely recall the classic underdog story of David and Goliath. But what happens after David dies? God’s people are in a frantic search for a new king. God instructs them to “not look on outward appearance, but on the heart” (1 Samuel 16:13).
God sent Samuel to choose the new king over Israel, instructing Samuel on who to choose. It’s important to know that God does not look at the same attributes that we do as humans. God sees things in us that we don’t see in ourselves. God also is able to turn the smallest things into something miraculous! As humans, we often continue to look to those who are wealthy, strong, in high positions or powerful to make a change in the world. We aspire to be stronger, wealthier, more powerful, and more dominant. God does not see as we see, instead God looks into our hearts. God calls us to raise leaders who care about what God cares about… love, mercy, generosity, and grace.
During this time of year, approaching our Annual Congregation Meeting, it is a rebooting of shorts for Lamb of God Church. Board positions shuffle, ministry areas recruit new volunteers, and we welcome a wave of new members into our community. I wonder… how might God be calling you to lead? If you’re someone who gravitates toward a relentless message of loving all people, then I’m certain God is calling you to serve. If you’re someone who gets excited about the events and ministry of the church, then God is calling you to lead. If you’re someone feeling called to something more, please follow that Spirit-filled nudge.
I promise there is a place for you in our community. We need your passion, your skills, and your heart. If your leadership in a specific role or ministry area is not obvious, or maybe the role doesn’t exist yet, then let’s get creative! In my observations, I find that people get so much more out of a faith-filled community when they begin to invest in the ministry that they care about. We are all passionate about something. We all have gifts.
King David was human. In fact, he had many shortcomings and we read about several instances of his unsettling behavior. The story of Bethsheba in 2 Samuel 11 comes to mind. The point is not that God calls sinful people to lead, the point is that God calls people to lead knowing that we are all sinful. I hope you know that you are worthy. God has equipped you with everything you need to reach your fullest potential.
The contribution that you make in the church and in the world is unlike any other. You are exactly who God is looking to accomplish the mission of loving and serving all people. You make a difference to Lamb of God, and Lamb of God makes a difference in the world!
With gratitude,
Pastor Lucas
